Kasaragod: In a brisk operation, the prime accused in Co-op bank fraud case involving Rs 3.78 crore has been nabbed by the cops.
U.K.Harris, 37, resident of Kuntaru Uliyathadka near Mulleria was arrested by Vidyanagar police team led by circle inspector H V Pramodan.
It may be recalled that a racket of cheating Nayammaramoole and Vidyanagar branches of Muthathodi co-op bank to the tune of Rs 3.78 cr after pleading fake gold had come to light.
In connection to the case, branch Manager Santhosh Kumar was arrested along with one appraiser by name T V Sathishan, Bank staff Sathyapalan (45) Jayarajan (45), resident of Pallikere and K A Abdul Majeed (29), resident of Citizen Nagar.
The police is likely to arrest Rekha, wife of bank manager Santhosh Kumar in whose name deposits worth Rs 56 lakhs were kept earlier and withdrawn.
Investigations have revealed that about 50 people are involved in the racket and police teams have been sent to locations in Kerala, Karnataka and Goa to nab them. During investigation the police have recovered ½ kg fake gold ornaments along with the receipt of 30 stores which supplied the ornaments. The prime accused had accounts in the main branch in addition to the Vidyanagar branch.
The issue came to light when Abdul Majeed had come to one of the bank branches to pledge gold and avail loan. Though the bank staff had certified that the gold pledged by him was genuine, some raised suspicion and when a jeweller tested the gold, it was found to be fake.
