Mangalore: Chaos prevailed at the Central Market area in Mangalore on January 4, Saturday after the street vendors tried to interrupt the protest being staged by the Central Market Merchants Association.











As informed by it earlier, the Association had on Saturday embarked upon the task of evacuating the street vendors only to meet with stiff resistance. Things worsened when the street vendors also started a counter-protest.
Even as Hameed Kandak, a member of Central Market Merchants Association began to address the protestors, the street vendors started shouting slogans. Just as things were getting out of control, the police rushed to the spot and took control of the situation. They even took into custody two street vendors who tried to pick up a quarrel with Kandak.
Few DYFI members were also present during the protest and they shouted slogans in support of the Central Market Street Vendors Association.
The police had to resort to a lathi charge as the groups pounded on each other; Imtiyaz, DYFI leader along with president of Street Vendors’ Association Sunil Kumar Bajal and few others belonging to both the groups were taken into custody.
