City girl bags bronze medal in World School Chess Championship

Mangaluru: A seven-year- girl pursuing her schooling in second standard at Lourdes Central School, Bejai, Shriyana S Mallya won bronze medal in the World School Chess Championship held at Lasi Romania from April 21 to April 30.

Born to Sandeep and Nandini Mallya, Shriyana a resident of Urwa, Mangaluru is also also student of Derik’s Chess School in the city.

World Chess Federation(FIDE) has awarded her Woman Candidate Master at age of seven.

The World Chess Championship was held in six open categories and six girl’s categories for the age group of 7,9,11,13,15 and 17. Nearly twenty girls from various countries participated in the championship.

Facing tough competition with lots of ups and downs, Shriyana defeated Khazakisthan girl Kaliakhmet Elna to garner 6.5 points and to strike bronze medal.
