Kasaragod: Central plantation crop research institute (CPCRI) which is in its centennial year since inception in 1916 known for innovation, sprang surprise by conducting a workshop on palms and its usages to revive the dying craft and a drive a message to youth on nature conservation.
Today plastics have invaded human lives in all spheres where handmade items using natural materials have lost ground. In order to exemplify the use of coconut palms in daily living CPCRI conducted a workshop by involving craftsmen known for palm craft.
During the workshop various items made of coconut and other palms like wedding pandal, hats, pans and decorative items were hand woven on the spot and displayed.
Children watching craftsmen weaving decorative items were spellbound by their craftsmanship as the green products found way to display area in no time. Once a lifeline of coastal life, coconut palms on the verge of extinction in ‘home industry’ sector received fresh lease of life as flowers made of palms used in rituals like, Daivaradane, Otthekola, Tambila were displayed.
The efforts by CPCRI were well appreciated as the workshop tried to keep the of modern youth abreast with the rich heritage and culture where even shacks were made of palms few years ago for people to reside.
Artist KK Marar inaugurated the workshop where Dr.Jagannath, Dr.Muralidhar, Tambhan, A Srinath were present among others.
