Chess tourney conducted for prisoners

Mangalore: The Prisons Department  and   United Karnataka Chess Association  along with The Issues and Concerns organized a chess tournament at the District Prison premises on Sunday February 23.

 

Chief Judicial Magistrate N.S.Patil was the chief guest for the event. Addressing the gathering he said that  he had  never come across such an occasion  in his 20 year career wherein all the inmates are smiling, like any other person in society.

Praising the initiative, he said that the inmates must face the system rather than blaming themselves for their misdeeds. He called upon the inmates to make use of the opportunities provided to them such as this chess tournament.

The event was cherished by intimates and other officials of the Prisons Department. Around 30 inmates took part in the tourney in which Ravi emerged as the champion while Mahesh won the runner up trophy and Gopal won the 2nd runner up. Surya Kumar and Hamsa won the consolation prizes.

Issues and Concerns Editor Jayaram Shriyan donated shirts and caps to the players. Prison Medical Officer Dr Rajaram Rai was also present on  the occasion.
