Mangalore: Though the protest of distressed areca growers scheduled for October 29 has been cancelled following the Centre announcing a package for the growers, the fight would however continue if the state government fails to distribute the compensation effectively, warned former chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda.
Speaking to reporters at the District BJP office on October 24, Thursday, Sadananda Gowda expressed his happiness over the announcement of Rs 175 crore package for the areca growers who are hit hard by Kole or fruit rot disease.
He further described this as the first victory for the areca growers who have been struggling since the past two and a half months for justifiable compensation.
He also accused the state government of failing to heed to the several appeals of the growers for aid.
Several BJP leaders including Pratap Sinha Nayak, District BJP President, Jayaram Shetty, Spokesperson and Kishore Rai, General Secretary, were present at the press meet.
