Central team in Padil to inspect proposed DC office land

Mangaluru: A team with officials from union government’s forest and environment department arrived in the city on Friday, June 17 to inspect the site at Padil where the proposed deputy commissioner’s (DC) office and district complex is set to be built.

The team discussed the issue when they visited the deputy commissioner’s office. Additional deputy commissioner, Kumar and divisional forest officer, Hanumanthappa were present during the discussion.

Deputy Commissioner, A B Ibrahim said that shifting the office to a new building was decided as the present building had become old. He informed the team that 5.89 acres of land identified for the district complex at Padil, which was under forest department earlier, has been already transferred to revenue department. Only those trees will be felled which is necessary. He also told that all offices of the revenue department will be at single place after the shifting.

The team later visited the site at Padil for the survey. The team will again visit the site on Saturday and continue the survey where they will check the trees marked for felling.

The survey will be submitted before the National Green Tribunal where a hearing is scheduled on July 4 regarding the complaint filed against proposed building and the felling of trees.

The Central government deputed the team after environmentalists had objected to the proposed building as it involved destruction of wildlife and valuable trees.
