CAMPCO asks growers not to panic over areca ban proposal

Mangalore: Konkodi Padmanabha, President of CAMPCO has said that the CAMPCO was with areca growers at all times and that they need not worry over the  Central Government plans to impose a ban on arecanut.

Speaking to reporters at the CAMPCO Head Office here on December 11, Wednesday, he said six well-known and veteran advocates have been arguing on behalf of arecanut growers. He said advocates namely  Ram Jethmalani, Vishwanath Shetty, retired high court judge, Sundaram, K N Bhat, Basavaprabhu Patel and Binu Madhavan are arguing CAMPCO’s case in the Supreme Court and that CAMPCO has submitted all the legal documents to these advocates.

Konkodi Padmanabha also informed that with regards to the ban on Gutka, their team met Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, as 60% of the total sales are in Gujarat and Modi has responded positively to the appeal. Various scientific bodies have declared that arecanut is not harmful and it does not cause cancer, and that it is used as a medicinal cure, Konkodi Padmanabha said.

“In the year 2007, the Karnataka High Court too declared that arecanut was not harmful, but has lots of medicinal uses. Even the Food Security Corporation of the central government has considered arecanut as a food substance,” he informed.

K Satishchandra Bhandary, Vice-President, CAMPCO and M Suresh Bhandary, Managing Director of  CAMPCO were present during the press meet.
