Kasargod: Fearing arrest, sand mafia men unloaded the sand that truck was carrying on the police jeep on June 29, Sunday. The incident took place at Mookrampare when the police were chasing the vehicle and about to overtake it.It is learnt, policemen fired four rounds at the gang of sand mafia which however fled the scene.

Acting on credible information about an unrestricted transportation of sand into the state from Karnataka during night time, the police was alert on the Perla check post.

Their team was led by probationary ASP Dr Himendranath. They saw a car that was sent as an escort for tipper truck carrying sand, passing the area at high speed.  The car was followed thereafter  by a tipper loaded with sand, which did not stop even after the police signalled it. The policemen followed the truck, but the tipper did not allow the police jeep to overtake it, and took narrow inner roads.

As the police jeep was trying to overtake the sand-laden truck, the culprits tried to create a rampage and in an instant unloaded sand on the road and fled away.

When the police vehicle was blocked  they fired at the truck and the car which however escaped in different directions.
