Mangaluru: The councilors belonging to the Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) on Thursday disrupted Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) general meeting, for failing to post a regular commissioner, despite several promises.

As soon as the meeting started, Leader of the Opposition Premananda Shetty raised objection stating that the ruling congress – both in the state and MCC – has not posted a regular commissioner since five months. Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake had promised to appoint a commissioner in a month, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during his visit to the city assured appointment of a commissioner within fifteen days. However, both have failed to stand by their words. Due to the clashes between the ministers within the Congress, the development works in the MCC have received a setback”, he said.
Meanwhile, all the councilors sat in the well of the house, holding a demonstration and raising slogans against the Congress.
Mayor Mahabala Marla’s efforts to convince the BJP councilors, went in vain. Some councilors of the Congress termed the BJP demonstration as a ‘drama’. “It would have been right, if the BJP raised issues which troubled the public. Not posting a regular commissioner has not affected any developmental works. The present additional commissioner Gokuldas Nayak has been given the complete power to carry out works”, he said.
In the meanwhile, the Mayor approved all the programmes which were on the agenda without the consent of the opposition members.
Approvals have been given, decisions were taken on various proposals including installing LED street lights, taking up 25 development works under the third phase of chief minister’s sanction of Rs 100 crore, appointment of nearly 100 technical staff in the health section on contract, road widening, filling pot-holes, renaming of Valencia – Koti Chennaya Circle road into Wilfy Rebimbus road, naming one of the circles in the city as ‘Rashtrakavi Kuvempu road’, sanctioning Rs 10 lakh for Vishwa Tuluvere Parba Tulu cultural meet, awarding the contract for issuing water consumption bills and outsourcing the data entry work of self assessment system taxation to private agency.
