Mangaluru: Only 10 percent of underworld threats are real, while 90 percent of them are fake, according to Mangaluru City Police Commissioner R. Hitendra.

Addressing an interaction session on Thursday at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mangaluru, R. Hitendra asked not to entertain such calls. ‘Some miscreants use the names of underworld dons to blackmail traders. Do not entertain them. Areca dealers, jewellery sellers receive such calls, but those calls can be traced, he said.

In few cases, the threat calls are received by real estate dealers. Firstly, the dealers take the help of underworld dons, as most of the lands in the city are under litigation. After getting help, these dealers do not fulfill their demands. Hence, there is always a threat from the other section, he added.

‘Cow and women’

R. Hitendra reasoned that the issues involving the theft of cows and missing cases of women have been the roots of communal tension in the area. “The inter-faith differences are not bridged due to political reasons. People have no tolerance to small things. Hence, the city is known to be communally sensitive”, he said.

Responding to a question on moral policing, Commissioner termed the act as ‘goodaism’. Those who are involved in such crimes can be booked under the Goonda Act. The parents have to create awareness, he said.

To a question on creating an account in the social media, Hitendra said that a Facebook page Mangaluru traffic police is very active in the social media. We will examine if we should start another account for crime related posts.

On the rise in cyber crimes, he said Mangaluru will have its own office which deals with cyber related issues. It’s already sanctioned and the office will function under CID. The office will be accommodated in the Kadri Police station and Home Minister K.J George has promised to get it done at the earliest, he said.

On traffic issues, the commissioner said only widening the roads can solve the problem. It’s not about posting more number of traffic policemen. There are many bottlenecks in the city. Unless, we rectify them, the traffic jam will be there”, he said.

KCCI president Nigam B. Vasani asked the commissioner to allot policemen on patrolling in the old Bunder area, which is a trading hub of Mangaluru. Several theafts have been reported in the area, allotting atleast two beats in the area would help the traders, he said.
