Bantwal: BJP managed to win majority seats in the recently upgraded Vittal town panchayath polls on April 25. The counting was done on Wednesday, April 27 at St Rita college. Out of 18 seats, BJP has won 12 seats and the Congress managed to win 6 seats.

BJP had contested in 18 seats and it secured 5,154 votes where as Congress managed to win 4,102 votes. SDPI which contested in 2 seats secured 188 votes and CPI which contested in 3 seats secured 79 votes. JD(S) contested in one seat securing 44 votes, where as Independent candidate Gangadhar Naik secured 145 votes.

Only officials, government workers, candidates, agents and journalists were allowed inside the counting centre.

Soon after the candidates emerged victorious, the party workers held a victory rally in Vittal.

Lowest votes: Dejappa Poojary (CPM)-11

Highest margin of votes in victory: Abdul Rahiman Hasainar (Congress – 335)

Lowest margin of votes in defeat: K Malathi Monappa Poojary (BJP – 12)

BJP also won a majority at the first ever elections held for the newly upgraded Kotekar town panchayath. BJP managed to win 9 seats where as the Congress won only 4 seats. Two BJP rebel candidates have won along with CPIM and SDPI winning one seat each.
