BEM institutions celebrating 175th anniversary

Mangalore :The Basel Mission had played a key role in the field of education, economics, business and agriculture of the region, said Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala.

Participating in the  five-day 175th year celebration of BEM Institutions at Carstreet in Mangalore on January 24, Friday, Dr Heggade recalled that he had been part of the post centenary golden jubilee celebrations of the institutions and added he was now happy to be part of its 175th celebrations.

Lauding the role played by Basel Mission which uplifted the poor through education at a time when education was affordable only to the rich, Dr Heggade said even his father Late Ratnavarma Heggade studied in BEM Institutions.

He launched the blueprint of the 3D future building project plan of the institutions. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2 crores and the blue print was prepared by Prakash Simons, President of UBMC who is also a builder and architect.

Walter J Maben, who delivered the keynote address, said  the Basel Missionaries provided education to all irrespective of caste or creed.

A total of 11 retired teachers and non-teaching faculty of the institution were honoured.

Suresh Ballal, former MUDA Chairman, Roshan Kumar, Jayanthi Purushottam, BEM PU College Principal, Raghavendra Rao and others were on the dais.
