Mangalore: South Kanara – Udupi Beedi Contractor’s Union demanded a hike of 3% in the percentage of commission. As of now, we are paid Rs. 10.60 for every 1,000 beedi. If the company increases it, we would receive Rs 16, said union president Mohammed Raffi.

Addressing the reporters, here in the city, Raffi said that we are in the business for several years. Every year, the company increases allowance of the beedi rollers and of the beedi contractors, while this year, they have not done it. And, our requests have not been attended too.

He also said that we had a meeting with the management board of beedi companies several times, which also failed to give intended results.

Meanwhile, the union has condemned the response of the company and said that they will boycott work until they attend to our demands. For this, all the contractors are supporting us, he said.
