Be compassionate to poor, Minister S R Patil advises medicos

Mangaluru: AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre held its ninth graduation ceremony and annual day at its college auditorium on Saturday, March 19.

Dr Sharanprakash Rudrappa Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Karnataka, who was the chief guest on the occasion told that said that the students work very hard to complete their graduation.

“Most of the graduates here aspire to study post-graduation. This profession is a responsibility. The people and society pays a lot of respect to doctors,” he said.

“You need to have good communication skills and compassion for patients. Money is secondary. The satisfaction you get after treating a patient successfully is nothing compared to any amount of money. We should remember that we have a commitment towards the society,” he added.

Patil said that country was in need of doctors as the population was increasing.

“We doctors need to spend a year and a half serving rural areas. I’m trying to bring transparency in the department I head. Six government medical colleges are coming up out of which three are already set up and the other three will be established soon. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a new medical college in Bengaluru. The govermnet is creating  super-speciality hospitals to cater to the poor of the state. You all have to be compassionate to the poor and serve the rural parts of the country,” he stressed.

78 graduates from the batch of 2010 and 58 postgraduates of 2012 batch received their graduation certificates from the minister and other dignitaries.  

A J Shetty, President, AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre felicitated the minister.

Padma Shri Dr. V P Gangadharan, Medical Oncologist, Lake Shore Hospital, Kochi, Kerala, was the guest of honour.

Prashanth Shetty, Vice President, AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Dr Ramesh Pai, Dean, AJIMS, Dr Prashanth Marla, Medical Director, AJHRC was present on the occasion.

Dr Sudhir Hegde welcomed the gathering. Dr. Supriya Kamath and Dr. Shilpa compered the programme.
