Karkala :  A young woman who was married just seven months ago, has committed suicide at her parental home at Bobbarapalke in Palli village recently, reportedly frustrated by the harassment meted out to her by her alcoholic husband.

The deceased woman is  Jayashree (23), daughter of Padma Kulal. Jayashree was given in marriage to Ashok Kulal, an autorickshaw driver by profession and a resident of Padubidri-Kanchinadka on October 18, 2013. It is learnt, her parents had given 13 sovereigns of jewellery and cash as dowry at the time of marriage.

Sources say their marriage was at rocks within just two months with Ashok harassing and torturing her for more dowry. He even used to come home drunk and abuse his wife who was partially deaf and had stammering problem. It is said her family had brought her health problem to the notice of Ashok’s family well before marriage.

In the meanwhile, Ashok had even pledged the jewels given as dowry and when her family objected, he got them back, returned them to his wife and then sent her to her parental home.

Though Jayashree was treated for the depression she suffered owing to all this, she has now ended her life while she was all alone at home.

As per rules, Karkala tahsildar Babu Devadiga conducted the Mahajar. Her family members had blamed her husband Ashok for her death.
