Mangalore : Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Tulasi Maddineni has informed that a total of 962 drinking water projects were completed in the district at a cost of Rs 51.79 crores in order to ensure that there is no drinking water problem in any district.

She gave the above information at a meeting convened under the presidenthip of DK in-charge Secretary Bharatlal Meena who is also the Principal Secretary of Agriculture Department to study the drought situation, drinking water problem as well as the fodder problems in the district. The meet was held at the Netravathi Auditorium of the Zilla Panchayat on Wednesday May 7.
She said the several projects completed in 2013-14 include 126 bore wells, 38 minor water supply projects, 5 hand pump bore wells, five open wells, water supply to 67 schools and 72 Anganavadis.
She also informed that 21 multi village drinking water projects have been approved and that tender process of four such projects are underway. Seventeen projects are awaiting approval, she stated.
Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim brought to the notice of the in-charge secretary the water problems faced in some rural areas due to disruption in electricity supply.
Bharatlal Meena who sought information from MESCOM officials directed to replace the transformers that are out of order.
The Deputy Commissioner informed that he had the hopes that the Mangalore city corporation limits will not face water problem until June end.
He also informed that a sum of Rs 25.83 crore has been released to be distributed as compensation to 36,562 areca growers who incurred losses due to Kole disease.
He said natural calamities in 2014 have claimed seven lives, while five cattle have died. Four persons have suffered injuries while 79 houses have collapsed. He said compensation have been distributed to the affected.
