Bantwal:An eight year old girl who was found working as a domestic help in the house of a police personnel has been rescued in a raid by a team of officials from the Child Helpline, Labour Department, Education Department and Police Department.

The raid followed a complaint to the Child Line that a child was being treated inhumanely in a house at Ajjibettu in BC Road. Police have now registered case against Eru Naik, a constable in Kadri traffic police station and his wife Jyothi Bhai, a village accountant in Bantwal, in whose house the girl was traced.

The rescued child labourer is said to be from Bellary. It is learnt, the couple who were government servants had decided to employ the little girl to take care of their one and a half year old baby. It is learnt, they even used to make the girl do other domestic chores.

However, during the raid, the officials only found the girl and  the baby in the house. On enquiry of the girl, it came to light that  her parents were in Tamil Nadu with three of her other siblings. It was evident that the couple who employed the girl, had violated human rights by not sending her to school and also depriving her of basic amenities. When the authorities contacted the couple over phone they failed to respond and finally  a complaint was lodged.  The constable Eru Naik was summoned and his statement documented.

The girl was produced before CWC Chairperson Asha Nayak.  The medical examination of the girl has revealed that she might be around eight to nine years old.

Prasanna Kumar, Labour Commissioner, Renny D’Souza, Director  of Child Helpline, Sheshashayana Acharya, Block Education Officer and others were in the official team which raided the house.
