4 of family die as compound wall crashes over house at Bajpe

Mangalore : Four members of a family were killed while seven other sustained injuries when a nearby compound wall of a commercial complex collapsed on their house  at Thottilagundi in Bajpe on June 18, Tuesday morning.

Those killed are Sundari (55), Sundar (58), Baby (45) and Chaitra (14). The injured are   Ashwitha (14), Ashwini (18), Asha (38), Veena (50), Ashwath (11),Shambhavi (12) and Shekhar. The house belonged to Shekhar who was also injured.  If one house was completely damaged, another house where the owner Shekhar was sleeping was partially damaged. There were a total nine occupants in the house which was razed to the ground in the mishap.

Neighbours said a girl who was in the house had rushed out on hearing the loud sound and alerted  everyone. However, by then the four who were fast asleep had lost their lives, while others were rescued.

Locals informed that they had lodged a written complaint with the DC as well as the local panchayat against the construction of a compound wall in a higher area by the commercial complex. They said the local panchayat had told that permission had not been granted for the compound wall.
It is said there was no outlet for the rain water which led to the weakening of the compound wall.  
State Home Minister KJ George who is in the city, visited the  spot of the tragedy along with District Minister Ramanatha Rai, Youth Affairs Minister Abhayachandra Jain and Deputy Commissioner N Prakash.

The Home Minister announced a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. He also said temporary arrangements will be made for the stay of the affected family on the second floor of the Panchayat building.

Bajpe police have registered a case.
