Mangaluru: “The Mangalore University is a leading center for teaching and research in this region of the country. Many scholars, teachers and alumni have brought laurels to this institution”, said Prof Goverdhan Mehta, former director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru, and national research professor, School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad at Mangaluru varsity on Wednesday June 17.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion of 33rd convocation, Prof Goverdhan Mehta stressed a broader exposure and a deeper understanding of the local milieu, country and the world is essential for the youth to prepare for a purposeful life and invent a better future.
Prof Goverdhan Mehta directing the chancellor conveyed to act as a protector and promoter of education. He pointed that although ensuring quality education is the primary responsibility of the university, the breakneck speed has severely compromised the universities’ ability to maintain and enhance quality in other sections.
Mehta argued in his speech that “endemic shortage of faculty and learning resources, mindless proliferation of courses, dwindling infrastructure, inadequate budgetary support, indifferent leadership and governance deficit in general had a crippling effect on quality education.”
He further emphasized the fundamental importance of understanding the complexity and diversity of nation he said India is a rainbow nation. “It is the melting point of contrasts and colors where past, present and future coexist.”
During occasion many students were awarded with their convocation certificates and some were awarded with doctorates, as well. A total of 1,315 candidates out of 23,385 candidates passed their degrees in person at the event and rest in absentia. Out of the 1,315 candidates, 88 candidates will receive their PhD degrees (arts – 11, science – 63, commerce – 9 and education – 5).
At the convocation the Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, along with the chancellor of the university awarded 37 gold medals and 63 cash prizes. In total, 57 rank holders – post-graduate 40/under-graduate -17: including 30 in science and Technology; 14 in arts, nine in commerce; three in education and one in post-graduate diploma were awarded.
University chancellor and Karnataka governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala conferred the honorary doctorates. Shashi Kiran Shetty and Prof B V Chowdari were present.
