175th anniversary celebrations at BEM institutions

Mangalore:The MLA of Mangalore south constituency JR Lobo inaugurated the 175th  anniversary celebrations of one of the oldest institutions of the state, Basel Evangelical Mission(BEM) institutions by unveiling the 175th anniversary celebration Logo.

He was the chief guest of the programme held in the BEM school hall, in the city.

Mr. Lobo in his Inaugural address said “We have to remember the sacrifice of the missionaries through whom the people of Mangalore have been able to receive the education. These institutions were founded when the society had different sectors on the  basis of caste and creed. Even though the British govt. posed some restrictions on the institutions, it has continued its noble cause of educating people. So as a sign of gratitude we have to come together and work for the betterment of the institution.”

 “The institutions stand as a model by taking very less fees when the education sector has become a business.”, he added.

The guest of honor and Principal and Joint Director of Teacher Education Mrs. Philomena Lobo inaugurated the program by lightening the lamp.

President of the 175th anniversary celebrations committee Mr. Walter Maben rendered the key note address while Principal of Karnataka Theological College Rev. Dr. Hannibal  R Cabral launched the official website of the institution.

Ex-Deputy Mayor and corporator Mr. rajendra Kumar,  corporator Rammeza Nazir, vice-president of the 175th anniversary celebrations committee Alwyn Colaco, Treasurer Alwyn Ananada and others were present at the occasion.

Earlier a procession was organized marking the 175th celebrations by the management.  Students, old students of BEM institution were accompanied by dancing dolls, yakshagana artists and tiger dancers, which will commenced from the BEM grounds and concluded at the same venue via Navbharath Circle, City Centre, Sharavu Temple and car-street.
