Karwar: A labourer was scammed off thousands of rupees after he received a call from a fake representative of the television reality show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”. Subsequently, the victim, identified as Abdul Khader, filed a complaint with the district’s cybercrime police.

The caller reportedly told Khader that he had won a Rs 25 lakh bumper lottery from “Kaun Banega Crorepati” on September 17. The caller then told Khader to contact Rana Pratap Singh from the reality show via Whatsapp video call.

The next day, an excited Khader called Rana Pratap Singh who confirmed that the victim was the lottery winner. Later, Singh called back and asked him to transfer Rs 7,000 to an account number that was provided to him. He further asked Khader to transfer an additional amount of Rs 25,000 as GST charges.

Khader agreed to all of it and transferred the full amount.

Soon after, he was asked to deposit an additional Rs 25,000 as a fee.

As he no longer had that much money, Khader borrowed Rs 8,000 and transferred it to the scammers.

Later, when Khader tried calling Singh, he found that the phone had been switched off. In total, he lost nearly Rs 40,000.
