Women’s march for liquor ban to reach Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday

Bengaluru: Scores of Karnataka’s rural women began a march spanning 200 kms, till the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. And their demand- ban the sale of liquor in the state. The march of around 2,500 women from as many as 23 districts, has been organised by the Madya Nisheda Andolana (MNA) with the slogan “Beer Beda Neer Beku.”

Women from places such as Mandya, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Mysuru and Tumakuru, began marching on Sunday, January 27, after a convention at the Siddaganga Matt.

The MNA, an organisation dedicated to bringing the prohibition to Karnataka, started the march on January 19, from Chitradurga. To spread their message, the women have been holding interactions and meetings with the residents of various villages along the way and have stopped at around nine villages so far.

An activist working with the movement said that the intention of the march is to highlight the negative influence of liquor in the day-to-day lives of the people. The activists also clarified that they are not affiliated to any political party.

On Sunday, the marching women reached the outskirts of the state’s capital, Kulavanahalli near Nelamangala and stayed there. They will be visiting T Begur, Dasanapura, Exhibition Grounds and Yeshwantpur before finally descending on the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 30.
