Bengaluru: A 28 year old woman died after the delivery at Motherhood Hospitals in Sahakaranagar on Wednesday. The family members of the woman accused the doctors and said it is a case of medical negligence.
Aparna Chetan from Yelahanka New Town was admitted to the private hopsital for delivery on Tuesday night. Since she had no labour pain, doctors had given injections for it later in the day. Family members suspected that this might be the reason for the complication. The woman complained of severe pain and breathing issues by 5.30 am on Wednesday.
Aravind, family friend of the woman, speaking to sources said, “Soon after the delivery, the hospital should have acted and informed the family about the condition but, for 45 minutes, the staff kept roaming around with the child. It was only later that they informed the family about the condition.”
Demanding action against the hospital, the family complained that there were only nurses to attend the patient and no doctors. Besides that, even the oxygen cylinder was not kept ready for the patient, they said.
Dr Rehan, Chairman of Motherhood Hospitals, denied all the allegations and said, “The family wished the delivery would take place today as it was an auspicious day. She has gestational diabetes. As there were no other complications, we decided to go ahead with it,” he said.
“At the time of delivery, the mother had amniotic fluid embolism (a condition where the amniotic fluid enters the blood stream). This lead to allergic reactions and cut the oxygen supply to the brain in both the child and mother. Before this, it was observed that the foetal heart rate was dropping and the doctor on duty did the best. She was taken in for a crash C-section with an intention to save both the child and mother,” Dr Rehan added.
The newborn which is in critical condition has been shifted to Rainbow Hospitals in Marathalli for treatment.
Aparna was employed as a manager with HDFC Bank. Her husband Chetan has lodged a complaint at the Kodigehalli police station.
