Water shortage may hit Bangalore

Bangalore Apr 17: As the officials and the ministers are wholly immersed in election process, nobody appears to bother about the impending water crisis in the city.  If it doesn’t rain before season in Cauvery basin, people may face severe water shortage in Bangalore.

The Bangalore Water Board officials have said that they have to depend on Hemavathi reservoir for potable water supply for the city this year.  It starts raining only after June 15 in Bangalore and Cauvery catchment areas, till then Hemavathi reservoir is the only source of water for Bangaloreans.

Though there was 14 TMC water in KRS, additional release of two TMC of water to Tamil Nadu as per the Supreme Court order has brought down the water level.

As the water at the Shiva dam in Malavalli taluk was below minimum on Sunday, the Water Board officials have requested the Cauvery Irrigation Corporation to release additional water from KRC. But the water has yet not reached the Shiva dam.

Water Board Chief Engineer Narayan said, there is 2.86 TMC water in KRS, 3.9 TMC in Hemavathi and 0.73 TMC in Harangi. Bangalore’s water requirement of 1.5 TMC water per month can be managed up to May end. If it doesn’t rain around May, the water board is planning to draw water from Hemavathi dam.
