Bangalore: As the High Court has okayed the compulsory installation of set-top boxes, the cable television transmission will come to a standstill in the city from today.
The cable operators of the city had submitted a plea requesting to extend the time period for installation of set-top box and let them continue the transmission until then.
But a single-member High Court Bench has set aside the plea. Earlier in an interim order, the High Court had issued, it restrained the discontinuation of the service.
According to the City cable operators there are 15 lakh cable connections in the city but the multi-system operators put the figure at 26 lakh. As there is ambiguity in the number of cable connections the central and state governments are incurring losses, said senior counsel K G Raghavan
According to the Information and Broadcasting Department 68 per cent of the households have set top boxes. Some of those who had cable connections earlier have switched to DTH, while others are after the cable operators for set top boxes. These developments, however, have left the TV viewers confused.
