In Bengaluru on Monday evening, torrential rain and strong winds caused a piece of an under-construction building to collapse on top of a 17-year-old girl who received severe head injuries and her mother who broke fractures. The event happened within the boundaries of the Konanakunte police station in Vaddarapalya, close to Gottigere.

Kushi, a second PU student, and her mother Sonali, a teacher at a private school, have been named among the injured. When a mother and daughter went outside to gather up drying clothing at 6:15 p.m., the four-story under-construction structure next to their home fell, according to the police, because it had begun to rain heavily.

The under-construction building’s hollow parapet blocks fell in upon them. The car driver husband of Sonali was not home at the time of the event.

“Her mother broke her hand, and Kushi suffered severe injuries when bricks dropped on her head. Kushi was not admitted right away because there were no beds available in Nimhans, according to police. “Neighbors rushed them to a nearby hospital before shifting Kushi to Nimhans, and her mother to Victoria Hospital,” the police added.

Details are still being gathered, according to BBMP Joint Commissioner Ajith R. Bommanahalli, and the Palike is collaborating with the police on this.

An under-construction wall collapsed in the Bommanahalli region in another occurrence. There were no reported injuries, though. According to BBMP officials, a team has been assembled to address the problem as soon as possible.

Rain is expected throughout the next 48 hours.

Up till 8.30 p.m., the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 10.5 mm of rain, and HAL airport recorded 2.7 mm. For the next 48 hours, IMD has predicted rain, thundershowers, and lightning across Bengaluru and a few isolated areas of South Interior Karnataka.

Congestion in the city’s traffic

Within two hours, the BBMP control room got over 70 reports about tree fall occurrences as the city’s traffic situation worsened. Officials report that the West Zone accounted for the greatest number of calls, with 27, followed by the South Zone (16 calls) and the East Zone (14 calls). Up to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, six complaints were submitted in Rajarajeshwari Nagar and three in Yelahanka.

Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) reported that they saw significant water logging at 33 spots throughout the city, despite the fact that the BBMP only reported flooding in Okalipuram. “This resulted in significant traffic congestion in multiple locations; BTP is attempting to guarantee efficient traffic flow continuously.” According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), MN Anucheth, there are temporary traffic diversions in place.
