This morning, a large and dried-out tree trunk collapsed on Lavelle Road, a prominent thoroughfare in the heart of the city. The incident occurred opposite the Dakshin Honda car dealership, behind the Bowring Institute, at approximately 9:15 am. The falling trunk landed on a newly-registered Honda Elevate SUV, causing damage to its roof and windshield. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Cubbon Park Traffic Police swiftly responded to the scene to clear the debris and ensure smooth traffic flow. An officer from the station suggested that the tree, which protrudes from the Bowring Institute compound wall, had been dry for several years, attributing its collapse to the prevailing heat.
Following the incident, the traffic police issued an advisory urging commuters to consider alternative routes. This incident adds to a series of similar cases in recent times, highlighting the potential risks associated with aged and deteriorating trees. Notably, in April, a bride-to-be named Chanchal Chaudhary sustained a spinal cord injury when a tree fell on her on Nanjappa Road, Shanthi Nagar. Similarly, last July, an 18-year-old student named Rajashekhar K V suffered severe injuries after a peepal tree collapsed on him at Chandrika Hotel Junction. Despite nearly a year passing since the incident, Rajashekhar continues his rehabilitation journey to regain mobility.
