Bengaluru: State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday described the Supreme Court order directing Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as most unfortunate.

Reacting to the Supreme Court order, Yeddyurappa said that he was terribly disappointed with the most impractical, unscientific and grossly unfair verdict that seemed to have given without taking into consideration the genuine plight of Karnataka on many fronts, including inadequate water for drinking purpose to six major cities and 600 villages. “What is more painful is that the Supreme Court has not considered the fact that Tamil Nadu will get ample ‘Rabi’ rains in the months of October, November and December, where as rainy season in Karnataka is over. Karnataka has to wait for rains till next monsoon,” Yeddyurappa said.
He said that the Cauvery Supervisory Committee on Monday had directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water but the apex court has asked Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water which was nothing but rubbing salt and pepper on the wounds of the state. “The Supreme Court also directed the Centre to constitute Cauvery Water Management Board with representatives from all the four riparian states. It is shocking and has come as a bolt from the blue. The working of this board and its pros and cons need an in-depth study,’’ he said.
The state BJP president said that Supreme Court’s direction to Karnataka was the colossal failure of the state government in properly presenting the state’s cause before the highest court of the land. “I hold the state government singularly responsible for this disastrous consequence. The origin of this disaster is the state government’s unilateral decision to file an affidavit stating that it will release 10,000 cusecs of water. That marked the beginning of the disaster in the making,” he said.
