Bengaluru/Mangaluru: MLC V S Ugrappa, Chairperson of the Expert Committee for Preventing Sexual Harassment Against Women and Children, warned of serious action against the erring residential schools following the death of Kavya,a tenth grade student at Alva’s Group of Institutions recently.
There is an urgent need for amendment of existing laws to prevent atrocities against women and children, said Ugrappa and added Dakshina Kannda district administration has been asked to provide suitable compensation to the deceased student Kavya’s family.
Alva’s group running the residential school and hostel without permission was known only during the visit to the institution premises, Ugrappa clarified. The institution managements will be made accountable for the accidental death of students within their premises, Ugrappa cautioned.
The lift inside the hostel building remained non-functional and the cleanliness aspects were very poor within the Alva’s hostel premises, said Ugrappa. Officials have been asked to rectify the glaring mistakes that exist in the system in order to provide basic amenities to the students in residential schools/hostels, Ugrappa said.
