Bengaluru: In the ongoing story of the unfortunate labourers at the Sobha Dream Acres construction site, the stool samples of seven of the ten workers tested positive for Cholera.
The autopsy report of Srikanth Sahu, a 20-year-old who died after contracting cholera, is yet to be released as there was a delay in performing the procedure due to want of permission from the family.
Many of the labourers who had taken ill, were treated for cholera based on their symptoms. The stool samples were tested by St. John’s Hospital, where they found that seven of the ten samples contained the cholera bacteria, said a medical officer. The water samples collected from the site however, tested positive only for E.coli. There have been no new cases since the incident was first reported.
The construction site has been inspected for violations under the Building and Other Construction Worker’s Act, Contract Labour Act and the Interstate Migrant Workers’ Act. Meanwhile, the labour department has instructed Sobha Developers to compensate the families of the deceased as per the Workmen’s Compensation Act.
According to Additional Labour Commissioner H L Guruprasad, the company is said to be bearing the medical bills of the sick, as there is no provision in the Workmen’s Compensation Act for their compensation. He also added that in case the two workmen in the ICU lose their earning capacity as a result of the incident, they will be compensated accordingly.
The Varthur Police are waiting on the St. John’s Hospital to release the autopsy report of Srikanth Sahu. The hospital is waiting to include the Forensic Science Laboratory’s finding in the autopsy report.
