Religious practice of walking on cinders to continue

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided not to ban he had promised to bring on the age old ritual of walking on cinders after some of his own party legislators opposed to it.

The CM on Tuesday had announced to ban the ritual after the opposition party were asking the government to enhance the compensation amount to people who suffered burn injuries from the ritual at Tumakuru. However, at the Congress parliamentary party meeting held here on Wednesday, most of his legislators opposed the move, although a few supported him.

It is said that while the Congress legislators felt that the ritual was superstition, many of them said that the decision of banning the ritual would go against the party as its still being practiced in any of the rural areas.

The CM at the end agreed with the majority of his party legislators and decided not to ban the ritual.
