Bengaluru: Traffic police on Tuesday cracked down on autorickshaw drivers for several violations. After a day-long crackdown, cops booked 4,255 drivers for refusing to ply to commuter’s destination.
In all, 3,247 cases were booked in east, south, southeast and central areas of Bengaluru, and 1,008 cases in west, north and northeast areas. Vehicle documents were seized from these drivers. Citing violation of permits, police suspended their driving licences and recommended suspension of vehicle permits.
This is the second such drive where more than 100 policemen in mufti were deployed to crack down on autorickshaw drivers. Cops created a list of areas from where most complaints against autorickshaws were reported. In Bengaluru west division, 93 autorickshaws were seized for severe violations.
“One problem area was where most private buses stop, especially near Madiwala and City Market. We’ve been told that the prepaid auto stands don’t work and drivers bully passengers,” Babu Rajendra Prasad, deputy commissioner of police (east), said.
“Among the complaints were cases of emergencies like visiting hospitals and commuters were denied transport by such drivers,” he added.
