Bengaluru: An inappropriate remark by a professor against a student for wearing shorts to class at a Law college kicked off a furore on Monday. Two days later the entire class wore shorts to the professor’s class in protest against the public shaming.

According to reports, the professor had rebuked the student with inappropriate remarks and chastised her before the entire class.

A student said, “On noticing the shorts, the professor chastised her before the entire class by asking her to ‘dress properly’. The student was deeply uncomfortable with the remark, as were many of us, since we do not think it is correct for a teacher to impose his/her notions about appropriate clothing upon students.”

When the student objected to his comments and tried to discuss the issue, the professor reportedly scorned her and allegedly questioned her integrity.

According to reports, the professor cast aspersions on her ‘character’, saying she could choose to ‘come to class without a dress also’.

Two days later the incident, the outraged students came up with a unique protest against the professor, wearing pair of shorts to class.

Demanding an independent fact-finding committee to look into the incident, students came up with a statement, “It is not our intention to colour the professor as sexist… We leave it to an independent enquiry to pass judgment. Our point is that derogatory remarks were passed against our batchmate that no teacher should, and there is a patent lack of responsibility being displayed about the same.”

Vice-Chancellor R. Venkata Rao said, “A faculty meeting is being convened on April 11 to discuss the incident.”
