Bangalore: Rescue at the nick of time, Karnatakas Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar on Tuesday rescued a family trapped in a car by jumping into a lake. The minister, who was travelling to Bangalore from Tirthahalli on Tuesday morning, noticed a sinking car in Beguvali lake between Shimoga and Bangalore.

Immediately, he stopped his convoy and without minding the morning chill, jumped into the water along with his driver and body guard and saved the family of a businessman who was with his wife and kids.

A doctor was called by the minister who treated Uday Kumar(40), his wife Suma(35),his mother Geetha(55) sons aged 14 and 8, and a three-year-old nephew of Uday. Meanwhile the minister called his friends and arranged breakfast and medicines for them and also gave Uday his clothes before resuming his journey to Bangalore.

Uday, a native of Bhadravathi and owner of an electrical goods shop, was driving back from Karkala, while this incident took place. Uday said it was a “rebirth” for his family.

He said ,”I had started at 4am from Karkala. On reaching the tank bund, the steering locked, and the car plunged into the lake.” Water began gushing in through an open window. “I made best efforts to open the door and rescue others. But I panicked and fell unconscious.”

“I don not know how to thank minister Kimmane Ratnakar. It is because of his efforts that we are alive. Or else, all the six of us would have drowned,” he said.

The family was lucky to get the ministers help at the right time.
