Bengaluru: Union Urban Development and Information Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday announced that the State government is contemplating to connect the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to the metro network.
A feasibility study was conducted by RITES and the final route to KIA has been decided. Currently, the work of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was under way.
Announcing this at a function organised to flag off the last stretch of the Green Line here on Saturday, Naidu suggested to the State government to declare non-motorised roads in the city to enable families to move easily by avoiding congestion.
“Green urban mobility scheme is aimed at promoting public transport and non-motorised transport to address the growing problems of congestion and pollution with enhanced private sector participation,” he said.
With the completion of Phase 1, the ridership is likely to increase to five lakh passenger per day.
The network of the second phase (72 km) will be completed at an investment of Rs. 26,405 crore by 2020.
The Phase II project consists of four extensions to the existing lines and two new lines (R.V. Road to Bommasandra and Gottigere-IIMB-Nagawara) with 61 stations (49 elevated and 12 underground).
The Union Minister also told the State to procure 75 per cent of goods required for construction of metro rail locally which would generate local employment.
