Bengaluru: After consortium of 17 banks said that liquor baron Vijay Mallya was a ‘willful defaulter’, the BBMP too has said that Mallya owes a romping Rs 60 lac to the civic agency as taxes.
With Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George giving a target of collecting Rs 503 cr before March 31, the BBMP revenue department is on its toes, putting together the names of the defaulters.
Sources said that the BBMP had served notice of the Khata holder of four buildings in UB City in Bengaluru- United Breweries Holding Limited, over non-payment of property tax of Rs 61.8 lakh. Two out of the four buildings have not paid taxes over the last eight years.
However, since the chances of Mallya coming to India by March 31 is rather bleak, the BBMP sources have no idea as to how to procure the amount.
“As per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, if khata holders do not reply within a week, the civic body can initiate proceedings to seize properties,” an official said.
One may have to wait and watch if the BBMP will remain silent or crap the whip against this ‘high profile’ defaulter.
