Lockdown impact: Child Helpline flooded with complaints of child marriages

Bengaluru: From the day 1 of locdown, till now, the state child helpline has received several complaints of child marriages.

A majority of these marriages were averted with the help of government agencies.

According to the data, between March 24, first day of lock down and April 30, a total of 151 complaints of child marriages was registered with the child helpline 1098. Highest calls were from mine rich Ballari district from where 20 complaints were registered.

A total of 14 each complaints were registered from Davanagere and Chitradurga, while 11 each complaints were registered from Mysuru and Chikkaballapura. Mandya had eight such complaints.

Interestingly, no complaint of child marriages were reported from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Experts and officials are worried over the post-lockdown trend.

According to them, once the lockdown is lifted, the poor families may opt for child marriages in the name of reducing the burden of their family.
