Bangalore: A lady medical practitioner turned thief has been arrested by the police after she was caught red-handed while trying to steal gold ornaments from a display of ornaments arranged at a star hotel in the city, recently.

The culprit has been identified as 51-year-old Kalpana, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar who was a doctor who was obsessed with jewels.
Deputy police commissioner of Bangalore (north) said that the ornaments she stole were never sold, but only worn by her. She made it a point to attend ornaments exhibitions held at Palace Ground, Jayamahal etc in the form of a curious onlooker. Last month, she had escaped with gold ornaments weighing about 75 grams from an ornaments exhibition at Jayamahal Palace Hotel.
The police have also learnt that she had been arrested by Subrahmanyanagar police relating to the theft of a laptop in 2008 whereas a complaint about the ornament theft has been registered in J C Nagar police station.
Shadow Police personnel, were appointed at an exhibition when Kalpana was caught red-handed when she was trying to steal gold ornaments. During her questioning, Kalpana reportedly confessed to her crimes. Gold ornaments worth about Rs 32 Lakhs have been recovered from her, the police officers said.
