Bengaluru: Former chief minister and leader of Opposition in the State Assembly H D Kumaraswamy on Wednesday demanded the authorities concerned to convene a special session of the State Assembly to discuss about the injustice done to the state in Cauvery water dispute.
Speaking to media persons here, H D Kumarswamy said, the State Assembly is the only available and right forum for the legislators to discuss about the injustice done to the state in Cauvery water dispute. “With the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, farmers in Karnataka are facing lot of problems. I want the government to convene a special session of the State Assembly immediately to discuss about the Cauvery issue. I am also demanding the state government to give Rs 25,000 compensation to each farmer in Cauvery basin. Let the government release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Let the state government supply Cauvery water to New Delhi through pipelines. I want the state government to allocate around Rs 3,000 crore to help the farmers in Cauvery basin,’’ Kumaraswamy said.
He said that H D Deve Gowda had advised Siddaramaiah to release Cauvery water expecting justice to the state when the Special Leave Petition (SLP) comes for hearing in the Supreme Court. “It is true that I have demanded the chief minister not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu since it would cause problems for farmers in Karnataka. I also told the chief minister of my support to him if he has to resign or go to jail for violating the Supreme Court order,’’ he said.
Mayor post
Kumaraswamy said that JD(S) would have a tie-up with the political party that is ready to give the Mayor’s post to JD(S). “I have demanded that the Deputy Mayor post should be given to the corporator from the minority community but some leaders opined that I was talking against JD(S) MLA Gopalaiah. What is the benefit for the JD(S) for having a tie-up with Congress in the BBMP? Hapless and innocent people have lost shelter during the demolition drive by the BBMP. The BBMP authorities have stopped the demolition when it comes to properties owned by affluent people including Kannada film star Darshan. I want to know where the Mayor is. Where is the BBMP Commissioner now?’’ he said.
