Bengaluru: Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan has strongly denounced the Karnataka government’s proposal to erect a 10-storey building within Cubbon Park, labeling it as an egregious assault on the city’s precious green spaces.
The contentious plan entails replacing the old Election Commission office adjacent to the press club in Cubbon Park with a massive structure, sparking widespread opposition from environmentalists and activists.
Expressing vehement opposition, MP PC Mohan characterized the proposal as a “green genocide,” emphasizing the urgent need for the government to halt any such endeavors. He underscored the significance of preserving Bengaluru’s cherished lung space, warning against its encroachment by concrete monstrosities.
Amid mounting concerns, the horticulture department, responsible for Cubbon Park’s upkeep, is currently deliberating on the matter, with a decision anticipated in the coming weeks. Notably, Cubbon Park has been safeguarded from construction activities since the enactment of the Karnataka Government Park Act in 1975.
Although a 2019 ruling by the high court granted permission for construction at the site of the old Election Commission building, it stipulated the preservation of surrounding trees, a condition that remains a focal point of contention.
