Karachi Bakery incident: Indiranagar police arrest nine youth

Bengaluru: Indiranagar police arrested nine persons for allegedly forcing ‘The Karachi Bakery’ on 100 feet road of the Indiranagar to cover the word ‘Karachi’, on Friday late night.

‘The Karachi Bakery and Cafe’, started in 1953 is one of the major hang out spots of Indiranagar area, which is considered as one of the upmarket areas of the city.

According to the police, the nine youths were arrested based on the CCTV footage collected from the local buildings.
“All the arrested are claiming that they are the members of a soldier welfare organisation. We are looking into their claims,” said police.

Meanwhile, the management of the bakery has issued a press statement that the founder of the bakery Khan Chand Ramani kept the name as Karachi as he migrated from Pakistan to India after the partition of the country.

The incident of protest against the bakery happened after the February 14 Pulwama attack that claimed lives of scores of CRPF troopers. Jaish-E-Mohammed organisation has claimed responsibility of the blast in Pulwama.

Following the incident, Karachi bakery posted an official statement on Twitter, explaining the origin of the name and adding, ‘The essence of Karachi Bakery is absolutely Indian by heart and will remain so’, read a part of the tweet.
