Kannada starlet honey traps a doctor, demands Rs 1 crore, police bust racket

The racket which came to light after a famous doctor went to the police has raised many questions over the dark side of the film industry.

According to reports, Nayana Krishna, along with a group used to honey trap people and extort money from them. The group demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore in exchange of the video tape from the doctor in this case. The doctor after paying Rs 1 lakh to the group informed the police. Police nabbed three of her accomplices when they came to collect money from the doctor. Since the arrest of her accomplices, she and one more member of the group are absconding from Bangalore.

Two of her accomplices are from local Kannada TV news channels. They were working as a transport manager and a video editor. Two others are police constables with Bangalore City Police.

Police suspect that Nayana Krishna has been honey trapping wealthy people for a long time and it is not the first incident. But, her accomplices told the police that it was the first incident.

According to some veteran crime reporters, such rackets have been operating in Bangalore for many years and several small time film actresses were also involved in the past incidents. The Bangalore Police has now decided to go deeper into the issue and put an end to such extortion rackets. “The victims are rich people with some standing in the society. They rarely come forward with a complaint. Most of them quietly pay the extortion money. Even we are aware of such incidents, can’t act on our own. Such rackets take advantage of these things,” said a top police officer.

Background of the latest incident

On June 16, the syndicate allegedly sent one of the two TV starlets to the Jayanagar clinic of the 68-yearold physician, where he claims she seduced him and filmed them in the act. Two days later, he said, he was contacted by the accused and asked to pay Rs 1 crore as hush money, failing which they would air the video on TV channels. Then her accomplice Mallesh stepped in and promised the doctor he would negotiate with the extortionists to reduce the sum and it was brought down to Rs 25 lakh, in exchange for the video of the act. He paid Rs 1 lakh to the syndicate. Later he changed his mind and approached the police.

On the police’s instruction, he invited the accused home to collect the next installment. Two other accomplices Hemanth and Sunil who came to collect the money were arrested at his clinic. They were sacked by their employers the same day. Mallesh was arrested on June 20.

“Complaints of extortion have been registered against Hemanth and Sunil earlier as well. We expect more victims to come forward to expose this syndicate,” a Bangalore City Crime Branch officer said. Nayana, who is currently in Tamil Nadu, claims that she is innocent. “I had requested these two guys (Hemanth and Sunil) to help my friend recover Rs.10 lakh she had loaned the doctor. I am busy shooting for a Tamil movie. I will return to Bangalore and clear the air,” the actress told the media over the phone from Tamil Nadu. However, when the police tried to reach her, her phone had been switched off.
