Bengaluru: The early implementation of the Kalasa-Banduri canal project has created an outrage in several parts of the state- calling for a Statewide Bandh on September 5.
Meanwhile, Sugarcane growers from the region are also set to join the protest. Apart from the Bandh, they have scheduled to stage a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence in Bengaluru on September 7.
The Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers’ Association president Kurubur Shanthakumar on Wednesday announced the decision after meeting farmers at Nargund near here.
He said the farmers have been agitating for the past one-and-a-half month, but neither the state government nor the central governments has given any positive response to their plea.
On the other hand, the agitation of Pakshateera Raita Horata Samiti at Nargund entered its 49th day. They have pledged to hold a peaceful protest till the government gives an assurance about implementing the proposed project.
Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has given its support to the agitation. KSCA members, led by its secretary Brijesh Patel, submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in this regard.
