Bangalore: A gang of unidentified robbers gained entry into a Jain temple after sedating five security guards and escaped with gold jewellery and cash worth around Rs 21 lakh. The incident was reported in Shree Vasupujya Swami Jain Swetambar Temple on Obaiah Lane in Akkipet, early on Sunday.

The police said that a gang of 7-8 robbers attacked five security guards at the temple and sedated them, possibly with chloroform.

The police added that the burglers gained entry into the temple by breaking open the lock and cutting the grills with a hacksaw blade. They damaged six CCTV cameras before fleeing with the valuables.

According to Kanthi Lal, an employee of the Shree Vasupujya Swami Jain Swetambar Murthy Pujak Sangh that runs the temple, the trust office is attached to the temple and is located on the same premises. “As usual, the jewellery on the Jain Thirthankar’s idol was removed at 8 pm on Saturday and kept it in an almarah.

The miscreants entered the sanctum sanctorum, broke open the almirah lock and took away 440 grams of gold jewellery. They also broke open the six hundis (cash donation box) and took cash of around Rs 2 lakh. Later, they entered the trust’s office and escaped with cash of 3 lakh that was kept in the almirah,” he said.

“The incident came to light when the priest, Suresh Pujari, came to the temple at 5 am on Sunday. He was shocked to see all the guards unconscious and entered the shrine to find it burgled,” Mr Lal said.

“There are 16 cameras in the temple and the trust. The miscreants have damaged six of them,” he said.

The police said the burglary was planned well in advance. “Someone who knows the temple and the trust very well are behind the crime. Though the burglars damaged six CCTV cameras, their movements have been captured by other cameras. We are going through the footage,” A case is registered with the Cottonpet police station. Special teams have been formed to crack the case.
