International Women’s Day: BBMP to felicitate five women achievers

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), for the first time in in the history of civic body, gears up to celebrate the International Women’s Day on March 8 at its Head Office.

HC issues notice to BBMP on preventing water, power supply -1Speaking with media persons here on Monday, Mayor G Padmavathi said the arrangements have been made to celebrate the International Women’s Day at Dr Rajkumar Glass House on the premises of BMBP Head Office. “There are 95 women corporators in the BBMP Council. It will be apt to celebrate the International Women’s Day. We have decided to felicitate five women achievers on the occasion,’’ Mayor Padmavathi said.

She said that Social Welfare Department of BBMP would distribute sewing machines, knitting machines and embroidery instruments to the tailoring centres maintained by the BBMP. “The BBMP will open 50 stalls to create awareness on the state government welfare schemes. There will be separate stalls to exhibit products prepared by women’s organisations,’’ she said.

The mayor said women corporators would form a human chain at Hudson Circle to create awareness on the International Women’s Day. “Parvathamma Rajkumar, a well-known Kannada film producer, will inaugurate the exhibition while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah address the meeting on the occasion,’’ she said.

BBMP Council special meet

M K Gunashekar, chairman, standing committee on taxation and finance, BBMP, has said a special meeting of BBMP Council would be convened on March 13 to discuss the options to increase revenue and plug the loopholes in tax collection. “It is for the first of its kind in the annals of BBMP. The special meeting will discuss all options to increase the revenue to the civic body. The corporators can give suggestions on how to collect property tax effectively and the proposals for the developmental works in their respective wards,’’ Gunashekar said.

Welcoming suggestions from public on the proposed BBMP budget, the chairman of taxation and finance committee has said the BBMP had already received suggestions from residents. “We have received suggestions online from public. I will try to present a realistic budget by keeping all the suggestions in mind,’’ the chairman said.
