IIT Dharwad to be inaugurated on August 28

Bengaluru: The much awaited Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Dharwad campus will be inaugurated on August 28.

Karnataka’s first IIT opens at Dharwad-1Minister for Higher education Basavaraja Raya Reddy will inaugurate the campus. Union Minister for Human Resources Prakash Javedkar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will grace the occasion as chief guests, an official statement said.

The inaugural function was earlier slated on July 30, but was postponed due to the unrest that prevailed in the region over Mahadayi water dispute row.

The campus will have 120 students in the first batch, out of which 7 students are from the state. Others are from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and others. There are 10 girl students.

It may be recalled that Dharwad won the race in getting the IIT campus among three other strong contending cities like Gulbarga, Mysuru and Hassan.

When the state government finalised Dharwad as its choice for the campus, Gulbarga witnessed violent mass protests against Siddaramaiah.
