This scorching summer, ice apples, or tati nungu, are attracting a lot of Bengalureans. Street sellers are selling these cool, transparent, jelly-like palmyra fruits from Banashankari to Malleswaram.
Even though each fruit, which consists of two or three jelly-like portions, costs approximately Rs 100, people are enjoying it without raising any issues. Banashankari seller Srinivas Madeyan stated, “There is more demand than there was a year ago.
Because it has a cooling effect, people buy in quantity and store in the refrigerator. Every day, I turn a minimum profit of Rs 1,000. According to Karthik, a Jayanagari trader, there has been less production of ice apples this year, which has caused prices to soar. “People like to stand here and enjoy nungu as a snack or refreshment in the hot afternoons.”
Even though it may be purchased online, customers still prefer to purchase from carts. Jayanagar resident Krishna Arjun, 26, remarked, “I can pick and choose at the cart. It also makes you feel invigorated. When ordering online, there is a significant risk of obtaining spoiled goods.
The horticulture department’s assistant director (retired), Dr. S. V. Hittalmani, stated, “We rely on Tamil Nadu because Karnataka doesn’t produce tati nungu.” The ideal situation would be for the cultivation area to grow as demand does. Produce is offered at a premium price since it cannot satisfy consumer demand.
