Bengaluru: The Department of Collegiate Education (DCE) has decided to make biometric attendance compulsory for students. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the complaints of mass bunking in colleges.
According to sources in the state higher education department, as per the decision, all the college principals are directed to install biometric systems by this academic year-end (May 2019).
“The biometric system has already been made compulsory for the teaching and non-teaching faculty. There are complaints that students are not attending classes regularly. To ensure that the students will attend classroom activities without fail, this new system has been proposed,” explained an officer.
Higher education minister G T Devegowda confirmed the developments saying, “All the students will enter and leave the college after furnishing their biometric details. 75% attendance will be made compulsory for students to be able to appear for examinations.”
