Four held for trying to sell Brazilian currency

Bangalore: Four persons were arrested while they were trying to sell Brazilian currency notes near Hamid Shah Complex on Cubbonpet Main Road under the Halasur Gate police limits on Monday.

Somashekar, 35, a resident of Sunkadkatte; Kashi Vishwanath, 47, of Vijayanagar; Somashekar, 30, of Thyagarajnagar; and Muralidhar, 35, a native of Mandya, were trying to sell each Real for Rs 15. The police seized 2.48 lakh Reals, worth Rs 63.50 lakh. One Real is equal to Rs 25.

Following a tip-off, the police arrested the four and found 10 wads of the Brazilian currency in their possession. During interrogation, they told the police that a person by name Karupaiah, a native of Tamil Nadu, had given them the Reals and promised them a huge amount of money after selling them.

A senior police officer said preliminary investigation revealed that the currency was not in circulation in Brazil. The police are on the lookout for Karupaiah.
